Mason - Unity 2D Game Project
Mason and the Elegy of Time is a video game proof of concept that I developed during undergrad.
The story is about a boy who ventures beyond the walls of the village for the first time to save it from a malevolent threat that's already consumed the rest of the world.
Wireframe + asset list
I made the whole demo over the course of a semester, so I didn't get to integrate everything that I wanted (my scope was rather large!) but I cut back to make a playable demo. I intend to go back, clean up some stuff and finish it some day.
The game is a 2D side-scroller with a unique mechanic that would allow the player to manipulate time to solve puzzles. It was made in Unity, with all assets, music, and animations being created by me.
I wanted certain environments to have strong, monochromatic color schemes - not only to differentiate them, but to speak to Mason's emotional state during certain areas.
Mason currently includes a dialogue system, cutscenes and basic character animations.
Some things that were scrapped for the demo include a combat system and vine swinging (for now...)
Character Design
Mason comes from a village untouched by much of modern technology. Mason is the adventurous type, destined to leave his home behind and brave a new and exciting world. Because of that, I gave him a more nomadic style and played around with earth-toned colors until I found a combo I liked!
After nailing down a design, I worked on his animations. Mason can walk, run, jump, and climb.
Level Design
The map for the level went through many different iterations. I worked through platforms, parallax, scaling, environmental triggers and effects, landmarks, and color palette. It was also created entirely in Photoshop, separated into 4 different layers to achieve parallax as Mason moves across the screen.
The demo only features one level as of now, but will someday include lots more!
The final level design!
